Still shivering? Here’s how to make the most of the warmth (and the cold)

These days, most conversations lead to any of the following: comparing exhaled steam clouds, a read through of the weather app for the upcoming week, or a countdown of the days left until summer. And though the winter days are technically shorter, it feels like we’ve been rugging up for too long now (that is, those of us who never made it to Europe).


Yet there are many ways to beat the cold - and if not, many ways to enjoy it.


Thermals: While many think of thermals as exclusively appropriate for snowy climates, you’d be surprised how handy they are heading into Uni or to the shops - plus, it saves you layering 4-5 pieces of clothing unnecessarily. You might even start to overheat, a foreign feeling indeed!


Hot water bottle: Instant relief every time - and they’re cheap! Pop one into bed for a few minutes and return to toasty sheets. With body wrap options available, you’re guaranteed to feel at least 15 degrees warmer at home or on the go.


Staying active: It could be outdoors or in, but moving your body and getting the blood pumping is a great way to stay warm and stay healthy (not to mention the deliciously warm shower you’ll have afterwards).


Cook a hearty meal: There’s nothing like comfort food on a cold day - this could take the form of a pie, dal, soup, bolognese, curry; the options are endless. Make in bulk to reheat for Uni lunches, or as a last minute dinner after work. It’s healthy, cheap, and most of all warm!


Get out and about!: Whether it’s a steamy paella at the Queen Victoria Winter Night Market, or a refreshing walk within the Dandenong Ranges, there are some activities in Melbourne that are truly made for winter. Making the most of it really is the best way through until the temperature starts to crack the 20s again.
